Google doesn’t provide a breakdown of those activations, so that massive number includes smartphones, tablets, Kindles, and other devices running Android.

It would appear that Google is on the cusp of reaching one million devices activated each day. But can it? Android’s adoption rate has slowed in recent months. Let’s take a look at the numbers.

The last time we heard from Google about the Android daily activation rate was in February. The number at the point was 850,000 daily activations. It took four months (February to June) to grow by 50,000 activations. Cont….

Have you ever dropped your phone in a sink, in a swimming pool, or worse, a toilet? Have you ever forgotten your cellphone in your pocket and then put it in the washing machine? The steep cost of high-end smartphones available nowadays means people will spend slightly more to ensure that their device is protected and in pristine condition.

While most cases protect against unexpected drops and falls onto solid ground, waterproofing a device is a whole different ball game. A device dropped in water for even a few seconds could spell big trouble. While there are some household solutions to salvage a water-logged device, more often than not, you’ll need to replace the device. In case you and your device are frequently in close proximity to water and are worried about losing your phone to water damage, Liquipel has the answer for you.

Liquipel, based in Santa Ana, California, specializes in research and development of innovative protective coating for electronic devices. The Liquipel team has come up with an amazing proprietary technology that fully protects your device from any kind of water damage, and even lets you use the device while it is submerged in water (Temple Run in the shower anyone?), although that is obviously not a recommended use. Two amazing features of this product are:

Liquipel is not a cover but a nano-sized coating of armor which is invisible to the naked eye. It completely protects your device from water damage without taking away from the aesthetics of the device.

Permanently bonds at a molecular level to the device, not only on the outside, but inside as well. As seen from a video below, you can even remove the back cover of a smartphone while it is submerged in water and the device will still work.

Don’t take my word for it. This video explains how the technology works, as well as two videos of a product test using an HTC Thunderbolt 4G.

How it works

Product test

The list of devices supported by Liquipel so far is somewhat limited, but the developers mention that the list while continue to grow. For more information on Liquipel, you can visit their website here. Supported devices include:

Apple: iPod shuffle, iPhone 3G/S, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S

HTC: Evo 4G, Evo Shift 4G, MyTouch 4G

Samsung: Galaxy S2, Charge

Motorola: Droid X, Droid X2

What are your thoughts? How helpful will the Liquipel coating be for you? Are you planning to Liquipel your device?

On Wednesday we heard from Verizon that they would be ending its policy of allowing grandfathering in of contracts when purchasing a new phone. The company clarified the news Thursday, saying that only purchasers of subsidized phones (like the iPhone 4S and other flagship devices) would have to adopt the new pricing plan.

In the new announcement the company said

When the new options are introduced, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to our customers purchasing handsets and signing a new contract. Customers who choose to purchase phones at full retail price and are currently on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan. The same pricing and policies will apply to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.

This is just damage control after ticking off many of their subscribers, who thought they would be loosing their unlimited data plan.

We’re still weeks away from an official big stage unveiling, but it looks like Samsung’s next Galaxy phone is already out there. Vietnamese site Tinhte, which has past form on these kind of things, has got its hands on the GT-I9300 — purportedly the Galaxy S III if Samsung decides to follow its own naming convention. According to the specifications leaked, Tinhte reckons the phone houses a 4.6-inch display at 720 x 1184 resolution (roughly 320 DPI, picking up Android’s XHDPI classification — thanks Rawat), while a quad-core 1.4 GHz processor works on keeping the Ice Cream Sandwich OS running smoothly. Other hardware mentions include 1GB of RAM, 8-megapixel camera, 16GB of storage plus microSD capability. In a side-by-side comparison with the Galaxy Nexus, it looks like the phone’s display is incrementally larger, although we’re unable to tell the precise size, nor whether we’ll be treated to Super AMOLED Plus or some Pentile substitute.

Smartphones are becoming attractive targets for hackers and producers of malicious software because many of the devices contain a wealth of sensitive personal and financial information, experts said.

Seven percent of smartphone owners were victims of identity fraud in 2011, a one-third higher incidence rate compared to the general public, according to a recent survey by Javelin Strategy and Research.

The increased risk is attributable in part to consumer behavior. The survey found that 62 percent of smartphone owners don’t use a password on their home screen, enabling anyone to access their information if the phone is lost. The survey also found that 32 percent save login information on their devices.

More than 1 billion people worldwide are expected to own smartphones by 2016, according to Forrester Research. In the U.S. alone, consumers will own 257 million smartphones and 126 million tablet computers.

Smartphones often contain people’s banking data, contact information, work and personal email accounts, and family photos, making them a “wonderful target” for hackers, said Vikram Sethi, director of the Wright State University Institute of Defense Studies and Education.

Consumers tend to think their mobile devices are safer from break-ins than desktop computers, but many people fail to update their operating system or run security software on their smartphones, Sethi said.

“That leaves these devices actually more vulnerable than any other type of environment,” he said.

Mobile banking applications that allow users to quickly send money from their handheld device carry more information about the individual user and financial transactions than most home computers, which tend to be more secure, Sethi said.

“I think we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg with the vulnerabilities in mobile media,” he said.
